Yeah I did it digitally from scratch. I found a black and white reference photo that I kept inside my Photoshop file and painted this larger version beside it. Painting it at a larger scale makes me feel less like a digital photocopier, although it would be a lot easier to paint a 1:1 scale, since I could just put them side by side and figure out all the dimensions / angles that way.
